AFT's work in communities which are concerned with conserving farmland
includes technical assistance, research, community organizing, and policy
development. Among its achievements:
In Kane County, Illinois, AFT developed a formal farmland protection plan,
including a survey of voter interest in farmland protection, analysis of the
costs of various approaches to land preservation, and establishment of an
objective process for reviewing applications from landowners who want protection
for
their land.
In Stanislaus County, California, AFT worked with a variety of groups to form
a local land trust that will use state, federal, and private funds to acquire
easements on farm and ranch lands.
In Rensselaer County, New York, AFT's activities included educating
non-farming citizens about the role of farming in the local economy and
assembling
outside experts to help farmers make their farms more profitable.
In our view, AFT unites farmers, environmentalists, lawmakers by:
Protecting the best land through publicly funded agricultural conservation
easement programs;
Planning for growth with agriculture in mind through effective community
planning and growth management;
Keeping the land healthy for farmland by encouraging stewardship and
conservation practices.
