During the 15 months between April 1, 2000 and July 1, 2001,
U.S. population
grew from 281,400,000 to 284,800,000. What does 3,400,000
more people mean?
What do 3,400,000 people look like?
Imagine 3,400,000 people standing side by side, five feet apart,
arms outstretched touching hands. That line of people would
stretch along Interstate 80 from San Francisco to New York City,
then north along Interstate 95 to Portland, Maine. That is 15
months' U.S. population growth. Can you visualize that line
of people?
On July 1, 1901, the population of the U.S. was approximately
78 million.
Fifty years later it was approximately 155 million. Another
fifty years and
it was approximately 285 million. During the first fifty years
population
grew 77 million, but during the second fifty years it grew
130 million! U.S.
population growth is accelerating!
Consider some of the problems associated with the subjects listed
on the right-hand side of this page. Ask yourself, "How
many of those problems would be easier to solve, if U.S. population
wasn't growing at a rate of 3.5 million people a year--and accelerating?"
Consider other communal problems which are not associated with
the subjects listed on the right-hand side of this page and
ask the same question.
Click on other "Facts" buttons on the left-hand side
of this page. Become familiar with the factors causing U.S.
population to grow so dramatically in recent years; factors
which will cause it to continue to grow drastically in future
years. Consider action the public and policy makers should take
to reverse U.S. population growth.
Finally, think about action you might take to help the public
and policy makers understand the need to reverse U.S. population
growth. Think about taking action. Think Population!
